Our purpose: To link volunteer Anderson Area Doctors to our schools with the goal of educating and empowering our youth to make healthy life-long decisions. Our mission: To provide a framework that effectively harnesses and supports the volunteer efforts of our physician community, through a sustainable process that yields measurable results. The thrust of this effort will be health and wellness issues targeting the youth of our community, with a focus on prevention through role modeling and education about the quality and lifelong implications of the choices they make.
In 1999, AnMed Health granted a group of physicians funding to start a community outreach initiative. After much research the physicians decided to focus on the youth of Anderson County in the areas of substance abuse and trauma prevention. DOCLINK currently consists of 2 staff members, and over 100 physician volunteers. DOCLINK funds "Too Good for DRUGS II" booklets to every elementary school in the county, we also do "Tar Wars", a pro-health, tobacco-free program targeting 5th grade students in all 5 districts of Anderson County. In addition, DOCLINK also does 'Summer Safety' programsto local summer organizations. Our biggest project is "Strategies for Success", where we visit 9th grade students in districts 5 & 4 and 8th grade students in district 3 to conduct physician-driven presentations on a 2-day course in tobacco, alcohol, & other drugs, and nutrition, along with trauma and relationship violence prevention.
In addition to our initiative projects, DOCLINK has a strong presence in the community with representation in such coalitions/organizations as: Healthy People 2010, Anderson Student Awareness Program, Tobacco Free Anderson, IMPACT!, Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce & Anderson Services Association.
